Peter Morgan from Linton Contracting Ltd believes graduates from Tai Poutini Polytechnic’s Civil Plant programme have that “little bit extra”. The Southland company operates excavators, dump trucks and motor scrapers and Mr Morgan has employed two TPP graduates over the years. “Going through the TPP programme gives them a little bit extra when it comes to knowing how to use the machinery. They’ve also got a good grounding in safety and maintenance which gives them a head start,” he says. Mr Morgan believes the construction industry in Southland could be on the cusp of a boom so he may be looking to employ more TPP graduates in the future.

What Employers Say

9 Aug 2015

What Employers Say “We have been pleasantly surprised by the changes we have seen in D***. Since attending the course his productivity has been excellent... He has a good future with this firm.” D.M. (Wellington) “ T*** obviously had a great start at the Polytechnic. He was productive from day one and I am about to send him on another course. If he carries on like this he will be a team leader within two years.” A.C. (Invercargill) “I have no shortage of unskilled and unqualified people arriving at my door asking for a job. Now I tell them to go and do the course, and if the tutors tell me they will be OK, I will give them a job.” B.B. (Christchurch) “I can’t afford the time and money it costs to train people on the job. After my first experience with a graduate, I would take another three graduates on today.” D.S. (Invercargill)

HAYS

22 Jul 2015

I have been dealing with the Digger School through Tai Poutini Polytechnic for the past 2 years. During this time I have come to the campus on 4 occasions to talk to the students and register them for temporary work. Hays have happily placed 8 students into Labour/Operation roles within the Civil Industry to date. All placements have been a success, and 3 students are now in full time employment with large civil companies. I have found the students to have a god base understanding of Civil Industry taught from Tony Ballis. They have a good regard to health and safety, and arrive in the appropriate PPE gear. I would highly recommend the Digger School as I believe it gives the students a solid out-look into the Civil Sector and tools to succeed.
