Prior to the study tour I had attended a number of seminars on the Chinese tourist and visitor market. Participating in this event reinforced my knowledge and previous understanding and made real what I had learned. To a large extent the tour also presented a situation role reversal and gave first-hand experience of how a Chinese visitor must feel in New Zealand and an understanding of their behaviours as visitors and the reasons behind these.  The relationships built with fellow participants, those we met at the Uuniversity and in the industry will have sustaining value both from a personal and business perspective. I have returned with the confidence to move forward in my business and those I work with in the Chinese market. I commend Tai Poutini Polytechnic for their initiative and leadership in this area and highly recommend the study tour to others in the industry.  Jackie Gurden, Gurden Consulting.

The itinerary created for this trip, paired with the activities we did as a group outside of the prescribed day to day routine, enabled a deep immersion in the Chinese culture. This includedding gaining a greater insight of how Chinese; live life, do business, act as tourists, purchase  goods, deliver hospitality and also why they drive as they do[MaA1] [IJ2] . Upon reflection I feel this Study Tour delivers a solid familiarisation with the Chinese; language, society and culture which far exceeded my own expectations. This experience delivers you with real, tangible skills to help your business or your clients become more "China Ready", something we as a country need to lift our game on. I personally am really looking forward to returning to continue my Chinese enlightenment. W, with that said I would thoroughly recommend this trip to anyone. Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank both TPP and GTU for an extremely valuable and memorable experience.  Ashley Cassin, Left Coast Events

“We didn’t really have any expectation other than going somewhere we had never been before and the tour looked to be really good value with its emphasis on seeing and doing. What we got was great insight into the culture and the people. Just seeing what they’re dealing with in their own country, how that drives consumer behaviour and the issues they face in regard to their domestic tourism was very instructive. Some of the perspective gained will make us even more accommodating of our Chinese guests; which is actually pretty easy given it was the people and the relationships that were the highlight of the tour. They love to eat, drink and have a laugh. Our sort of people.. Matt and Steph Levien, Greymouth Seaside Top 10 Holiday Park.

“Having recently returned from the TPP/GTU study tour to Guilin China, I can say without a doubt that it was one of the most enlightening and educational things I have ever been involved in. Not only did I learn about Chinese customs, culture and tourism, this trip provided the opportunity to experience and understand first-hand the intricacies of this incredible country. Before joining this trip, I had hoped that I would gain a greater ability to understand and empathise with our Chinese customers and staff members and, on reflection, this experience definitely delivered. In addition, it has also provided the foundation to look at the ways in which we, as a business, can refine our current Chinese product portfolio. As the hosts, TPP did a great job. While being introduced to the Polytechnic’s extensive network of contacts in that market, it was unexpected to build some legitimate business leads. The itinerary, which had been pieced together after a considerable amount of thought, was very appropriate and was rolled out seamlessly.”    Andrew Aitken, Sales Manager – North, Ngāi Tahu Tourism
