Carpentry nails it

Carpentry is one of Tai Poutini Polytechnic's longest established and most popular programme, its success evident in the number of campus buildings and private houses built by carpentry students over the years.

In fact, these houses are in such demand that a ballot decides which is selected and, as in the real world, the owner is expected to be involved as their house is built.

Lead tutor Colin Skates says the building project is always a highlight of the carpentry programme. "It's real life learning. The students do everything. They literally build the house from the ground up and learn all aspects of the building trade in the process."

TPP's Certificate in Carpentry (Residential and Commercial) fully prepares students for a building apprenticeship. As well as getting great practical experience, students also complete all required theory unit standards as part of their course work.
