Course Attended: Chef & Hospitality
A spur-of-the-moment decision made Janaya Dodemaide put her hand up to attend TPP’s Hospitality (Cafes) Summer School at the end of last year. ‘One of the tutors from TPP came to school and did a presentation, I thought it looked interesting so decided to give it a go.’
She had no idea what to expect and, with her sights set on joining the Navy, hadn’t even considered hospitality as a potential career. How things change … Janaya thoroughly enjoyed the programme. ‘I learned so much – from how to make good coffee and how to prepare and store food safely, through to the correct way of setting a table and plating food and the importance of excellent customer service.’ She liked how the small class size offered scope for plenty of one-on-one tuition. ‘The tutors were really helpful. They made sure everyone knew what to do before moving on to the next topic.’
Janaya went to the Moana Hotel for her work experience placement, and was subsequently offered a full time position there. ‘I love my job. My boss, Phillip, and his partner, Robyn, are very supportive, and the people I work with are lovely. Every day is different.’ And while the Navy still beckons, Janaya says she ‘definitely’ wants to stick with hospitality for now.
