Course Attended: Chef & Hospitality
Gaining good practical skills brings opportunities, as Paige Bennett discovered when she did TPP’s National Certificate in Hospitality (Cafes).
The 15-week programme focuses on teaching the skills required to take on a customer services role and includes a work placement, which ensures students gain maximum experience in a real world setting. Key elements include barista skills, food and beverage service, tourism and communicating with people from other cultures, as well as the importance of teamwork.
Paige cites learning how to make good coffee and how to connect with customers as highlights. ‘We used role-plays to learn about the importance of customer service, which was fun. Someone would pretend something was wrong and then you’d do your best to manage it … dealing with different scenarios helped the whole class learn what to do.’
Paige particularly liked the way tutor Deb Hartigan delivered the programme. ‘Deb made learning fun and interesting. She made sure we got on with our work and kept us on track, but she’d also have a laugh with us. She related well to all the students.’
Finding work is ultimately what gaining a qualification is all about and, as Paige says, it also ‘shows you’re reliable and keen to commit to and complete something. If I hadn’t done the course I don’t think I’d have the confidence to work in hospitality.’
