Course Attended: Civil Plant Operation

Craig Reyland feels like he’s making a real difference helping oversee health and safety as part of the North Canterbury Infrastructure Recovery project in Kaikoura.

“I love going to work and doing what I’m doing. It’s a huge job and this project can be quite dangerous. It’s great being able to look out for the guys and help keep them safe. I wouldn’t be able to do it without the training I received at Tai Poutini Polytechnic.”

Craig worked for various civil and construction companies on the West Coast before deciding he needed more job security.

“I knew Tai Poutini’s Digger School would be a really good avenue to seek employment because companies were actively seeking graduates to fill positions. They have a really good reputation in the industry.”

During the course, Craig found his calling in health and safety.

“I wasn’t sure of the direction I wanted to take when I first started, but as we progressed through the course, I found my interests were in health and safety. The foundational knowledge you gain through Tai Poutini is really valuable for getting into the industry.”

Craig says the tutors have now become lifelong friends.

“They’re great motivators, they mentor you all the way through and actually care and invest in the students. Their knowledge is invaluable.”

Craig is continuing to enjoy the challenge of the Kaikoura infrastructure rebuild.

“It’s a huge operation which will continue for many years. I’m loving being a part of it, and get a real sense of achievement helping keep the guys safe.”

“If you want to get into civil construction you really need to look at Tai Poutini Polytechnic’s Digger School. You’ll get great support, training, and pick up some lifelong mates too.”
