Lisa McKay

Certificate in Pre-Health Science

Course Attended: Pre Entry Applied Health Sciences

Lisa McKay’s decision to do the Certificate in Pre-Health and Science at TPP was the first step of a life-changing journey on the way to a new career.

It took some sacrifices to make it happen. With her family then based in Westport, every week Lisa travelled to Greymouth and stayed in TPP student accommodation in order to be able to devote time to her studies. But as a ‘bit of a science geek’ and driven by a desire to make a difference, Lisa says it was all worth it.

‘When I started I didn’t really know what I wanted to do … but doing the course opened my eyes to the many different opportunities available in the health sector.’

While core science subjects are an essential part of the programme, equally important are academic skills and talks given by people willing to share their professional experience.

Two guest speakers in particular inspired Lisa. ‘It was hearing about social work and what social workers do that ignited the spark. I really want to help people and in social work the opportunities are endless.’

The McKay family has since moved to Nelson and Lisa is now doing a social work degree. ‘I treasured my time at TPP. It gave me a really good base of skills and has been excellent preparation for further study.’
