Trivette Levick

Course Attended: Hair, Beauty and Grooming

In a year hair stylist Trivette Levick has gone from a part-time retail job to a hairdressing apprenticeship and the possibility of one day opening his own business. He says studying has definitely given him a better future.

“I was working part-time and planning to study when I heard about the Hair, Beauty and Grooming programme and thought, why not give it a try? Well, I started it and absolutely loved it and ended up having the time of my life!”

Trivette got a job as soon as he graduated and has since started working at Artico in Greymouth. He says Tai Poutini Polytechnic’s partnerships and collaborations with local employers meant there were better work prospects for him when he finished studying.

“I would definitely say the course gave me better opportunities and helped me get a foot in the door. As well as the technical skills, we learned about communication, customer service and how to become more outgoing at work. Now I’m planning to finish my apprenticeship, keep hairdressing and hopefully one day own my own salon.

“If anyone is thinking of doing the course, I’d say definitely go for it – it’s not just about hairdressing, it’s about learning about people, getting out on the job, gaining confidence and creating a better future. I love my job now; I love watching people walk out the door feeling nice about themselves – that’s what makes it great.”
