Li Yi

Course Attended: Music and Audio - MAINZ

Taking it step by step

Li Yi has set her heart on a career in audio; her dream is to work in audio post-production in the film industry. And Li Yi knows that to get there, she needs to study and build experience, take it step by step.

Originally from Hunan province, China, when she was looking to further her education, Li Yi chose to take that first step and move to New Zealand to study the Certificate in Audio Engineering and Music Production at MAINZ.

A few months down the track and she’s settled in well. ‘MAINZ is cool. You meet all sorts of people at MAINZ. Young people who love music and older people with lots of experience who love music and are looking for a change. They all choose to study at MAINZ.’

Li Yi says she’s found everyone at MAINZ – staff, tutors and students alike – to be warm, welcoming and friendly. ‘When I was worried about my English language skills, my tutor consoled me and put the message out for anyone who could help. Many of my classmates said they would and that made me feel so happy.’

With its mix of theory as well as hands-on skills, Li Yi says she particularly enjoys the practical studio operation and electronic music production aspects of the programme. She’s already decided her best way forward is to continue on to do higher level study at MAINZ. ‘I know I’m learning useful skills at MAINZ. My aim is to study hard and achieve success in my chosen pathway.’

I’d worked as an assistant video editor before I came to MAINZ, but my dream is to find a job in audio post-production in the film industry. To get there, I think I need to study and build experience step by step. MAINZ is a good place to start. All sorts of people choose to study at MAINZ, whether young or older they all love music. I was worried about my English language skills at first, but my tutors and classmates have helped me, which has made me so happy. People at MAINZ are really warm hearted. It’s a wonderful place.
