Jose de Terán

Course Attended: Outdoor Instruction and Guiding

An exhilarating opportunity

Outdoor sports, adventure and adrenalin junkie Jose de Terán jumped at the chance to study outdoor instruction and guiding at TPP. He was already a student at Instituto Vertical in Chile and was thrilled to be offered the opportunity to take part in an educational exchange to New Zealand. ‘I could never have imagined coming here. It happened so fast, but it’s opened up a whole new world.’

Jose is thoroughly enjoying his TPP experience. While he specialises in rock climbing, he has also improved his whitewater and sea kayaking skills. He’s impressed by the calibre of the programme’s tutors and by their inclusive teaching style. ‘It’s amazing, I’m learning so much every day. They really care about you. It becomes a personal relationship.’

TPP helped Jose find accommodation and he lives with his fellow students in a flat right by the campus. ‘We have a really good time, we’re like a big community all studying outdoor education.’

It’s no surprise to learn Jose’s made many new friends and embraced the relaxed West Coast lifestyle. ‘I was kind of worried about the culture before I came, but people here are really friendly and welcoming, I feel like I’m part of a family. I’m loving it.’ Jose says he would 100% recommend TPP … ‘It’s totally cool.’

I was a student on a similar programme at Instituto Vertical in Chile when I was offered the opportunity to come to TPP. So far, it’s been an amazing experience. I’m learning so much every day. I specialise in rock climbing, and I’m also picking up skills in whitewater and sea kayaking. The tutors are excellent. They’re really caring. I was kind of worried before I came because I didn’t really know what to expect, but people here are so friendly and welcoming, I feel like I’m part of a family. I love it. It’s totally cool.
