Thriving tourism increases demand for graduates

As tourism on the West Coast begins to boom, tourism operators large and small are looking to Tai Poutini Polytech for graduates to fill roles in their businesses.

Jess Baker recently completed TPP’s Level 3 New Zealand Certificate in Tourism, as well as a short course in hospitality.  She quickly picked up a full-time position with Franz Josef Glacier Guides centre, and now works at the Punakaiki DOC visitor centre.  Her job includes talking to tourists, and she says that her study has provided her with an in-depth understanding of diverse cultures.

“Working here, there are so many different people coming through.  My course taught me all about the different cultures around the world, and about what people need and expect from us when they visit,” she says.

“Knowing what makes people tick means that I can help them in a better way, so that they really enjoy their West Coast experience,” she says.

The Certificate in Tourism has a specific West Coast flavour, and gives graduates the skills needed to flourish in New Zealand’s vibrant tourism industry.

Jess intends to take her new-found people skills to America with her after the summer.

“I’m going to work for Camp America, running holiday programme activities for children and teenagers.  I think that a grounding in tourism provides me with the ability to work in a variety of jobs, and I’m looking forward to seeing where my career takes me,” she says.
