Course Attended: Automotive Engineering
CoastWide Honda Service Manager Phil Murphy credits Tai Poutini Polytechnic (TPP) automotive engineering training with getting him to where he is today in the industry.
Phil trained with TPP in 2001 and has worked his way up in the local industry over the last 15 years.
“I’d heard that the polytechnic course was a really good place to start out, but it was really the connections you make that make a difference,” he says.
On-the-job training is a core part of the Certificate in Automotive Engineering training. Phil says getting to work directly with employers is a huge boost for your job prospects.
“For the businesses, it’s an assurance that you have the skills needed to get started. They don’t have to take you through the basics, you can just start work and start earning money.
“For the students, it’s a huge advantage: it’s a year-long course, but it probably puts you two years ahead. And then there are the contacts you make along the way.”
As a manager himself now, Phil says he would always hire someone who had been through the TPP training over another prospect. “Learning the basics before you walk into a workshop just gives you that edge,” he says.
“Taking the time to do the course definitely helped me get to where I am today. I’d advise anyone starting out to stick with it and work hard and they’ll do well.”
