Awards and Scholarships

Student awards (scholarships) are offered each year enabling
students attending full-time programmes at Tai Poutini Polytechnic to receive financial assistance.

Applications must be made using the appropriate forms (available from Reception or via the website) and received at the Polytechnic by the closing date.

Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria stated in the terms of reference for each award. For more information please contact the Student Services Co-ordinator.

There are also scholarships and awards offered by other organisations. Contact the Student Services Co-ordinator for further information.

Allan Beaumont Student Award

The Allan Beaumont Student Award is made annually to a student from the West Coast region enrolled in a full-time programme at Tai Poutini Polytechnic who, in the judgement of the selection committee, meets the eligibility criteria. The Award provides the sum of $1500 towards programme fees. Preference will be given to West Coast residents over 30 years of age who wish to undertake tertiary studies and who can demonstrate financial hardship.

The awards are made primarily on the basis of the demonstrated potential of the individual to benefit from a full-time programme at Tai Poutini Polytechnic.

Cave Creek Student Memorial Scholarships

On 28 April 1995, 13 students enrolled in the Certificate in Outdoor Recreation programme and one Department of Conservation Officer lost their lives when a viewing platform collapsed at Cave Creek on the West Coast.

An initiative by the Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics of New Zealand (ITPNZ), supported by the Government, led to the establishment of the Cave Creek Student Memorial Scholarship Fund.

All students enrolled in any full-time outdoor pursuits (Outdoor Recreation, Leadership and Guiding, or Ski Patrol) programmes at Tai Poutini Polytechnic and who are New Zealand citizens are eligible to apply for one of up to 20 scholarships for programme fees, programme-related costs or expenses.

The value of the scholarship will be dependent on the amount of funding available each year to distribute. Applicants are required to complete the “Cave Creek Memorial Scholarship Fund Application Form”.

Certificate in Pre-Health Science Greymouth Masonic Lodge Award

The Greymouth Lodge Award of $500 is made twice annually to two students of the Certificate in Pre-Health Science at Tai Poutini Polytechnic. The recipients will be chosen on a base of financial need and a high probability of successful completion.

First Intake: Closing date 10 March
Second Intake: Closing date 12 August

South Westland Community Activities Trust

Travel Assistance Award
Up to three awards of $200 each will be made to students enrolled at the Greymouth Campus on full-time Polytechnic programmes who are living south of the Taramakau River.

The awards are made solely to assist with travel costs to and from the Greymouth campus.

Entrance Awards

Student Living in the West Coast Region:
Up to one award of $600 is made to a student enrolled at the Greymouth Campus on a full-time programme, and who at the time of application has lived in the West Coast region for a minimum of one year.

Student Living South of the Taramakau River:
Up to one award of $600 is made to a student enrolled at the Greymouth Campus on a full-time programme, and who at the time of application has lived in the West Coast region, south of the Taramakau River, for a minimum of one year.

Tai Poutini Polytechnic Schools Awards

Each year Tai Poutini Polytechnic (TPP) proposes to offer a number of awards to students from West Coast secondary schools who demonstrate goal setting and passion in any of the programmes on offer at TPP. These awards are to be known as the Tai Poutini Polytechnic Schools Awards.

An individual award of $1000 towards programme fees at TPP is to be made available

To obtain the $1000 award students have to be in either Year 11, 12 or 13 and Provide a
minimum 500 word presentation on what steps you have taken towards your goal of studying at Tai Poutini Polytechnic.

Youth Guarantee Scheme 2012

In 2012 Tai Poutini Polytechnic’s Greymouth and Westport Campuses are offering places on the Government’s Youth Guarantee Scheme

Don’t miss out on this opportunity! Be in quick as places are limited.

What is Youth Guarantee?
The Youth Guarantee Scheme is for 16 to 17-year-olds who want to move into tertiary study. Youth Guarantee programmes of study are linked to Level 1-3 qualifications on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework. Programmes have a practical focus and students will gain an industry standard qualification.

Who is eligible?
The Youth Guarantee Scheme is a Government initiative aimed at 16-17 year olds who:
  • Want to learn practical skills
  • Are at least 16 or 17 at the start of the Youth Guarantee programme
  • Do not turn 18 until at least 3 months after the commencement of their programme
  • Agree not to apply for a Student Loan as fees will be paid for by through a Youth Guarantee Scholarship
  • All students enrolled in Youth Training or Youth Guarantee in 2011 are eligible to complete their study under Youth Guarantee in 2012, irrespective of age (ie. even if they have turned 18 in the meantime).
  • Commit to completion of a full qualification

Learning, cultural and emotional support are part of the Youth Guarantee Scheme
The Youth Guarantee Scheme is set up to ensure you move smoothly between school, tertiary education and work, so you will receive all the support you need. You will be able to:

  • Participate in an orientation programme and meet other students enrolled in programmes under the Youth Guarantee Scheme
  • Take part in monthly YG meetings where you will receive:
    -Learning support
    -Career planning and advice
    -Shared lunches
