Employer Profile
Peter Morgan – Linton Contracting Ltd
Peter Morgan from Linton Contracting Ltd believes graduates from Tai Poutini Polytechnic’s Civil Plant programme have that “little bit extra”.
The Southland company operates excavators, dump trucks and motor scrapers and Mr Morgan has employed two TPP graduates over the years.
“Going through the TPP programme gives them a little bit extra when it comes to knowing how to use the machinery. They’ve also got a good grounding in safety and maintenance which gives them a head start,” he says.
Mr Morgan believes the construction industry in Southland could be on the cusp of a boom so he may be looking to employ more TPP graduates in the future.

Career Opportunities
Times have changed! There was a time when a qualification at the commencement of a career would last a lifetime. In order to achieve the most of a career, employees today must embrace the life-time learning philosophy.
Civil construction is a vast industry with a huge number of speciality fields. This means an employee can identify the type of work, or perhaps a certain machine they would like to specialise in. This will maximise job satisfaction and ensure a secure future within the greater civil construction industry.
Civil construction is not ‘easy’ work, but most of those who work within this industry love it. It is a career that will allow you to make a difference in the lives of ordinary New Zealanders and pay you well for the privilege.
Some graduates have worked for a short time in New Zealand after graduation and have then travelled to countries such as Australia and Canada to work in mines or on large construction projects. Regardless of what you would like to do in the future within the civil construction or mining industries, a civil construction programme will give you the best possible start. Any fees and time spent attending the programme will be the best investment in your future that you could possibly make.
Fees paid for the Certificate in Civil Plant Operations (Introductory) or Civil Construction, Quarrying and Mining are eligible for an interest free student loan from Studylink1 for all New Zealand citizens and permanent residents. Many trainees also qualify for training allowances during the programme.

What Graduates Say
“I was made redundant and had always been interested in mining so I looked at Tai Poutini Polytechnic’s Civil, Quarrying and Mining programme which was aimed at those wanting to enter the industry. I moved the family to Greymouth and did the course, it was a great way for me to get into the industry. The tutors were really experienced and I learnt a lot from them about the basics of mining.
Now I am working full time in the mining industry and earning more money that I ever have. At the beginning of the year I was unemployed, and then a student, now we are looking at going from renting a house to buying one. That is a big change – it’s great.
I am doing further study now and the qualifications I got at TPP can be cross credited towards ongoing training. I have no regrets about doing the course and would recommend it to anyone.”
