This programme introduces students to basic hairdressing skills and will provide them with the knowledge, confidence and presentation to improve their performance in the workplace. It includes an introduction to the beauty industry including: facials, eyelash and eye brow tinting, nails and make up.

Our well-equipped training facility provides a realistic workplace environment. Opportunity will be provided to experience working with actual clients.
Students can purchase all products at reasonable prices.

This programme includes 18 NZQA unit standards and is 50% practical and 50% theory.

Further Study Paths
Further study includes National Certificates in Hairdressing. Students are also choosing to further their careers at the School of Asthetics.
Career Opportunities
Graduates can move into apprenticeships or employment in hairdressing salons or within the beauty industry, or pursue higher level programmes such as the National Certificates in Hairdressing.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 5.5 or above.
Special Notes:
- Selection criteria apply. Special entry may be granted where evidence exists that the applicant can successfully complete the programme.

New Zealand Certificate in Nanny Education Level 5

This programme gives a strong base for working with the individual child in their home, used as a stepping off point for working in an early childhood centre while studying for a Bachelor of Teaching and Learning (ECE).
The purpose of this programme is to educate students to become professional nannies who will care for children and their families.
It includes an interesting mix of family studies, infant and child development and care, health studies, play, home management and the opportunity to learn about children, how they grow and develop and how adults can best support them. It also includes practical placements with selected families and in early childhood centres.

Practical placements
During the year you will spend at least 400 hours working with selected families. A diverse range of families who have infants and children of varying ages are included to ensure you gain the widest possible range of experiences.
You will be offered, where possible, opportunities to work with newborn babies, twins, and families with special support needs. You will also experience a live-in placement in a rural environment.

Further Study Paths
Graduates may choose to continue their study in education, social or health disciplines. A clear pathway exists for students to enter the second year of the 3 year Diploma in Early Childhood Education.*
Tai Poutini Polytechnic has a relationship with the NZ College of Early Childhood Education (NZECE)(Christchurch). This relationship will enable students to enrol and complete further study by distance learning.*

Career Opportunities
There is a shortage worldwide of trained nannies for both day and live-in positions. Graduates may also get jobs in early childhood centres and continue studying towards the Diploma of Teaching and Learning (ECE).
Entry Criteria
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Applicants under 20 years of age must have a minimum of four years of secondary schooling and have clear evidence of study in language rich subjects such as English, History, Geography and othe subjects that include essay/academic writing/literacy skills.
- Applicants 20 years of age and over must show evidence of their ability to study at Level 5, including essay/academic writing/literacy skills.
- All applicants must pass a police check.
- Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELT (or equivalent) Level 5.5 or above.
- Applicants must provide evidence of previous experience with children, and involvement in a range of cultural, social sporting or community services.
Special Notes:
- Applicants will be required to attend an interview.
- Applicants need to show an awareness of the responsibilities involved in working with children, as well as empathy, patience, good humour and adaptability.
- Applicants need to demonstrate a high level of communication skills.

Certificate in Emergency Medic Care (Level 4)
|

The Certificate in Emergency Medic Care includes electives to suit all trades and is designed to provide graduates with the skills and knowledge to be proficient in managing emergency situations in the workplace as well as in an outdoor emergency situation.
The Certificate comprises of 3 of the following 4 Short Awards:
- Award in First Aid in the Workplace
- Award in Advanced First Aid and Outdoor Trauma
- Award in Workplace Risk Management and Safety Control
- Award in Pre Hospital Emergency Care
These short awards and selective electives may be completed as individual courses or may be completed as a stepping stone towards the Certificate in Emergency Medic Care.
If you work in a situation where serious injury is a risk and emergency help is some time away, then it is prudent for at least one person in your crew to have the extra skills that the Emergency Medic Care course provides.

These courses and short awards, are designed to provide appropriate emergency training for individuals from a diverse range of industries, and other industries that need in-depth appropriate emergency training for their labour forces. The development of safe practices in the workplace and have the potential to reduce injuries and fatalities within these industries..
Entry Criteria
- Be 16 years of age or over.
- Entry criteria for the Short Award in Pre Hospital Emergency Care, Short Award in Advanced First Aid and Outdoor Trauma and the Short Award in Workplace Risk Management and Safety Control are unit standards 6400, 6401 and 6402.
- Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 5.5 or above.
Special Entry may be granted where evidence exists that the applicant can successfully complete the programme. Please contact the Polytechnic for details.

Tai Poutini Polytechnic is currently offering the following courses:
Option 1 (expires 2013)
Comprehensive First Aid
This course is aimed at people who have never completed or do not have a current First Aid Qualification and takes approx 16 hours to complete. It includes the following NZQA Unit Standards:
- Unit 6400: Manage first aid in emergency situations.
- Unit 6401: Provide first aid until help arrives
- Unit 6402: Provide resuscitation
Units cover both trauma and medical subjects such as fractures, burns, major wounds, internal bleeding, head injuries, environmental conditions, anaphylaxis and spinal injuries, shock and bleeding, soft tissue injuries, poisoning, heart attack, asthma, diabetes, stroke and seizure, obstructed airways and CPR.
This option covers workplace first aid as required by Health & Safety regulations.
Option 2
First Aid as Life Skill
This qualification is set to replace the existing Comprehensive or Workplace First Aid NZQA units 6400, 6401 & 6402, which will be no longer valid & will expire completely in December 2013. This course takes approx 12 hours to complete and is held over two days. It includes the following unit standards.
- Unit 26551: Provide first aid for life threatening conditions.
- Unit 26552: Demonstrate knowledge of common first aid conditions & how to respond to them.
It will also be possible to add as an elective in the above course the following:
- Unit 25459: Provide first aid for young children.
CPR
This course covers basic CPR and airway obstruction and takes approx 3 hours to complete. It includes the following NZQA unit standard.
- Unit 6402: Provide resuscitation Level 2
Extra subjects can be added to these courses to cover your workplace needs.
First Aid Refresher
This course is aimed at people who have held a current First Aid Certificate for under two years. The unit covers almost the same subjects as the Comprehensive First Aid Course in less detail and is intended to refresh a persons understanding and to update any changes that have been made by the New Zealand Resuscitation Council.
This course takes approximately 8 hours to complete.

The Certificate in Pre Health & Science is a bridging programme that provides a sound basis for further study in the science and health disciplines.
Entry Criteria
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- In order to have the best chance of succeeding in this programme you will need a basic level of literacy and numeracy and be able to dedicate 5 days a week to meet the academic study requirements.
- During the programme you will be required to spell technical and specialised words correctly and have a working knowledge of your times tables.
- Basic word computing skills are an advantage
- You need to have access to a computer and the internet
- Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent)
- English Language requirements IELTS 6.0 Academic (with no lower than 5.5 in the speaking and reading subtests and 6.0 in the listening and writing subtests)
