Health, Safety and Compliance Programmes


Confined Space Training

 
This course will give you the necessary skills to safely work in a confined space outside of ventilated areas.

Training includes:
  • Selecting, using and maintaining harnesses, connectors, lanyards, tripods and other equipment
  • Identifying and assessing hazards and establishing controls
  • Emergency plans and rescue techniques
  • Knowledge of legislative requirements

Includes assessment and registration of credits for US:
  • US 17599 Plan a confined space entry
  • US 18426 Demonstrate knowledge of hazards associated with confined space. Minimum requirement to safely enter and work in a confined space - Department of Labour Guidance Notes.

Additional Unit Standards can be added in this course including:
  • US 25510 Operate an atmospheric testing device to determine a suitable atmosphere exists to work safely
  • US 3058 Perform gas tests for energy and chemical plant
  • US 19207 Enter, work in, and exit a confined space in the water industry
  • US 19205 Demonstrate knowledge of pathogens, diseases, and their control in the water industry

One day Refresher Courses are recommended every two years to update on changes to legislation and confined space techniques at work.

This programme will provide managers and team leaders with the potential to develop their business skills necessary to effectively manage small to medium scaffold companies.

This programme is aimed at the managers of scaffold companies who are seeking a greater depth and breadth of management skills.

Graduates will recognise the skills and knowledge required to:
  • add value by applying specific scaffolding business skills in the areas of leadership, human resources, occupational health and safety, and finance;
  • successfully tender, negotiate and manage contracts;
  • recruit and manage the performance and employment of staff;
  • manage the financial resources of an organisation; and

Certificate in Emergency Medic Care (Level 4)

 
The Certificate in Emergency Medic Care includes electives to suit all trades and is designed to provide graduates with the skills and knowledge to be proficient in managing emergency situations in the workplace as well as in an outdoor emergency situation.

The Certificate comprises of 3 of the following 4 Short Awards:
  • Award in First Aid in the Workplace
  • Award in Advanced First Aid and Outdoor Trauma
  • Award in Workplace Risk Management and Safety Control
  • Award in Pre Hospital Emergency Care

These short awards and selective electives may be completed as individual courses or may be completed as a stepping stone towards the Certificate in Emergency Medic Care.

If you work in a situation where serious injury is a risk and emergency help is some time away, then it is prudent for at least one person in your crew to have the extra skills that the Emergency Medic Care course provides.

First Aid

 
Tai Poutini Polytechnic is currently offering the following courses:

Option 1 (expires 2013)
Comprehensive First Aid

This course is aimed at people who have never completed or do not have a current First Aid Qualification and takes approx 16 hours to complete. It includes the following NZQA Unit Standards:

  • Unit 6400: Manage first aid in emergency situations.
  • Unit 6401: Provide first aid until help arrives
  • Unit 6402: Provide resuscitation

Units cover both trauma and medical subjects such as fractures, burns, major wounds, internal bleeding, head injuries, environmental conditions, anaphylaxis and spinal injuries, shock and bleeding, soft tissue injuries, poisoning, heart attack, asthma, diabetes, stroke and seizure, obstructed airways and CPR.

This option covers workplace first aid as required by Health & Safety regulations.

Option 2
First Aid as Life Skill

This qualification is set to replace the existing Comprehensive or Workplace First Aid NZQA units 6400, 6401 & 6402, which will be no longer valid & will expire completely in December 2013. This course takes approx 12 hours to complete and is held over two days. It includes the following unit standards.

  • Unit 26551: Provide first aid for life threatening conditions.
  • Unit 26552: Demonstrate knowledge of common first aid conditions & how to respond to them.

It will also be possible to add as an elective in the above course the following:
  • Unit 25459: Provide first aid for young children.

CPR

This course covers basic CPR and airway obstruction and takes approx 3 hours to complete. It includes the following NZQA unit standard.

  • Unit 6402: Provide resuscitation Level 2

Extra subjects can be added to these courses to cover your workplace needs.

First Aid Refresher

This course is aimed at people who have held a current First Aid Certificate for under two years. The unit covers almost the same subjects as the Comprehensive First Aid Course in less detail and is intended to refresh a persons understanding and to update any changes that have been made by the New Zealand Resuscitation Council.

This course takes approximately 8 hours to complete.

Traffic Management Training (Transit approved)

 
Traffic Control (TC)
This is a Level 1 Basic Traffic Controller certification, which covers the standards and procedures required by Transit NZ (COPTTM) Code of Practice for Temporary Traffic Management control.

Site Traffic Management Supervisor (STMS Level 1)
This is a Transit NZ Level 1 Site Traffic Management Supervisors certification, holders of this card are trained and qualified to include carrying out site management of (6) temporary traffic management worksites in compliance to Transit NZ (COPTTM) Code of Practice for Temporary Traffic Management procedures.

TC / STMS Level 1 (Refresher)
This is a Transit approved course for TC / STMS staff to recertify their Traffic Management Cards.

Entry Criteria


  • A new TC card holder has a (1 month) stand down period, before they are allegeable to attend STMS L1 course.
  • A TC / STMS traffic management card is (Valid) for 3 years from the date issue.
  • To attend TC / STMS Refresher course the (Card Holder) certification must be valid and or the cards expiry date has not exceed more than 12 months from the date issue.
  • If a person’s TC / STMS card has expired over 12 months, they must attend a full TC training course and are require to have a I month stand down to progress to the STMS L1 certification.
  • A person who has attended a Refresher course is “normally eligible” to advance to STMS L1 certification within a day of completing the refresher course.

Safe Lifting, Back Injury Prevention

 
This course has been designed for people who require knowledge & skills for back injury prevention and manual handling in the workplace.

Graduates will be able to identify the risk factors for occupational back injury; identify back care techniques; and identify work place control measures to reduce the risk of back injury.

These units will enable people to demonstrate knowledge of types of manual handling risks, describe injury risk reduction measures for manual handling, use safe manual handling practices with mechanical aids, and use safe manual handling practices without mechanical aids in the workplace.

Tai Poutini Polytechnic also provides more specialised training to suit individual industry and workplace needs.
  • Unit 17459: Demonstrate and apply knowledge of safe handling practices in the workplace.
  • Unit 17592: Identify the causes of back injury and methods to prevent back injuries in the workplace.

Fall Arrest Training

 
This course will give you skills and knowledge to work safely at height outside of protected areas. You will gain the knowledge to use the right fall arrest set up to keep you safe in a range of working situations.

Training includes:
  • Wearing and adjusting a harness
  • Instruction in the correct installation and use of connectors, lanyards, knots and ropes
  • Inspection and logging fall arrest equipment
  • Planning and carrying out successful rescues
  • Includes assessment and registration of credits for US: 15757 Employ fall arrest systems on building and construction sites. Minimum requirement for working at heights - Department of Labour Guidance Notes.

Unit Standards in this course include:
  • US 23229 Use a safety harness for fall prevention when working at height in a construction or related context
  • US 15757 Employ fall arrest systems on building and construction sites

Additional Unit Standards can be added in this course including:
  • US 14617 Prevent hazards associated with working at heights on construction sites
  • US 17600 Explain safe work practices for working at heights

Applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • In order to have the best chance of succeeding in this programme you will need a basic level of literacy and numeracy and be able to dedicate 5 days a week to meet the academic study requirements.
  • During the programme you will be required to spell technical and specialised words correctly and have a working knowledge of your times tables.
  • Basic word computing skills are an advantage

This programme comprising 9 compulsory credits and 41 elective credits, focuses on workplace health and safety knowledge as well as recognising competencies associated with a range of workplace safety and health issues from specific industries.

This programme is targeted at those currently working in industry that have an interest, desire or need to become more involved in the management and co-ordination of OSH activities in their places of work.

Graduates will gain skills and knowledge in:
  • The protection of health and safety in the workplace

National Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (Co-ordination) Level 4

 
This programme comprising 31 compulsory credits and 34 elective credits, focuses on the practical management of occupational health and safety in the workplace and allows candidates to select skills and knowledge relevant to their sector of industry.

This programme is targeted at those currently working in industry that hold positions as first line managers, safety supervisors/representatives, co-ordinators or team leaders and are actively involved in the practical management of OSH and wish to gain further skills and knowledge in this area.

  • Hazard identification and control for OSH practice
  • Evaluating OSH standards and practice
  • Incident investigation in the workplace
