Certificate in Industrial Rope Access (Working on Ropes) Level 4

What is Rope Access
Rope-access is a safe, efficient and cost effective way of accessing a work-site. In its simplest form, it involves abseiling. In its more advanced form, rope access can include techniques such as climbing, hauling and cableways (like a flying fox).
Rope access is used in various situations where access is limited; the most public of these being window washing but it also includes maintenance on high-rise buildings, cell-phone towers, confined spaces, and even on natural sites such as rock outcrops.
Qualifications such as welding, engineering, inspection, carpentry or glazing (just to name a few!) would be beneficial but not essential for a career on ropes.
Certificate of Competency Card (CoC)
Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates will be awarded with an NZQA/Tai Poutini Polytechnic National Certificate in Industrial Rope Access and are eligible to apply for the Certificate of Competency. This is a Department Of Labour Best Practice requirement for this industry.
Industry Support
The programme has the support of IRAANZ (Industrial Rope Access Association New Zealand) and SRIIT (Scaffolding, Rigging and Industrial Rope Industry Training) and is recognised by employers as a preferred means of entering this industry.
Industry Guidelines
This programme is taught to the ‘Industry Best Practice Guidelines’ which are endorsed by the Department of Labour. We also adhere to the manufacturers specifications when using their equipment.
What will you study?
The National Certificate in Industrial Rope Access (Working on Ropes) (Level 4) expands on the skills and knowledge gained during the Level 3 certificate. This programme equips you with the knowledge to find solutions to unfamiliar situations on the ropes and hones your practical skills in the vertical environment. The equipment and advanced techniques are explored in depth as is the theory and advanced legislation.
Graduates of the Level 4 certificate are competent and confident in a wide variety of situations. Advanced rescue techniques are taught extensively; however, the emphasis is placed on prevention and planning.
Core Elements
The Level 4 Industrial Rope Access programme covers advanced techniques, and many theory elements in greater detail:
- Advanced recovery techniques
- Plan, Prepare and Installation of permanent fixed anchors
- Lead and Aid climbing
- Hauling systems and needles
- Constructing cableways
Upon successful completion of this programme, you will gain the National Certificate in Industrial Rope Access (Working on Ropes) Level 4.

|
This course provides people in the Building and Construction industries with the ability to assess and select suitable EWP and an understanding of legislative requirements. It will provide the skills and knowledge to work safely and competently in setting up, daily maintenance and operation of various types of elevating work platforms on a construction or industrial site.
Unit Standards in this course include:
- US 23966 Describe types of elevating work platforms (EWPs), and legislative requirements for their use
Additional Unit Standards can be added in this course including:
- US 23960 Assess the worksite, prepare and operate a scissor lift EWP
- US 23961 Assess the worksite, prepare and operate a truck mounted EWP

|

This programme is aimed at the managers of scaffold companies who are seeking a greater depth and breadth of management skills.
Graduates will recognise the skills and knowledge required to:
- add value by applying specific scaffolding business skills in the areas of leadership, human resources, occupational health and safety, and finance;
- successfully tender, negotiate and manage contracts;
- recruit and manage the performance and employment of staff;

Join the Rigging scaffolding or rope access industries in NZ or overseas.
Exciting “hands on” careers are available in these industries. Riggers, scaffolders and rope access workers build and maintain some of NZs (or the worlds) tallest buildings and structures and set up heavy plant in major industries.
Work on off-shore drilling rigs, movie sets, and projects from major cities to isolated wind farms, cell phone towers and large industrial or construction sites.
There are great employment options for you in the height access industries.
During this programme you will have a chance to spend time in industry working on varied rigging and scaffolding projects.
While on work experience it is your chance to prove your worth to the industry.
Students are encouraged to find their own work experience on their own however tutors can assist with this if required.

National Certificate in Scaffolding (Elementary) Level 3
|
|
|
The National Certificate Scaffolding (Elementary) (Level 3) recognises the skills of a trade certified scaffolder.
The holder of the qualification is able to base out, erect, and dismantle straightforward proprietary and ‘tube and fitting’ scaffolding structures to any height. The holder can also assure the compliance of the structures, move safely on them at heights and lead a team to build elementary scaffolds.
This is a 2 year programme delivered in block courses which is integrated into your in-job training.
Graduates will be able to apply for a certificate of competence to erect notifiable scaffolding in accordance with the qualification gained. They will also be qualified to work at heights, set up fall arrest systems, and sling regular loads and communicate during crane operations.

The National Certificate in Advanced Scaffolding recognises the skills and knowledge required to work as a Specialist Scaffolder.
The term ‘advanced’ refers to the range of equipment used and the level of competence of the qualification holder.
Holders of the National Certificate with the Advanced Scaffolding strand are those whose work is in the
planning and erection of ALL scaffolds to meet the highest demands found in the scaffolding industry. This is the highest level qualification available in this industry.
This is a 1 year programme delivered in block courses that will reflect industry skills & knowledge gained in the industry

National Certificate in Rigging

The purpose of these programmes is to improve the performance and knowledge of people in the rigging industry and to develop practical skills and a theoretical understanding of rigging within the construction industry.
Core Elements
The programme is unique and specifically designed to offer comprehensive and structured training in the following areas:
- Maintain a range of tools and equipment
- Understand and apply the Health and Safety in Employment Act
- Plan, prepare and complete rigging work to level required for industry
- Erect, plumb and level steel buildings and structures
- Set up and use a fall arrest system
- Read workshop engineering plans and drawings
- Perform relevant calculations
On completion of a prescribed course of study you may gain the National Certificates in either Basic Rigging, Intermediate Rigging, or Advanced Rigging.
Entry Criteria
- Be 16 years of age or over.
- Applicants must have successfully achieved NCEA Level One (or equivalent) or be able to demonstrate sound written/oral knowledge and skills.
- If in full time employment applicants must be able to enter into a training agreement with their employer.

This course will give you skills and knowledge to work safely at height outside of protected areas. You will gain the knowledge to use the right fall arrest set up to keep you safe in a range of working situations.
Training includes:
- Wearing and adjusting a harness
- Instruction in the correct installation and use of connectors, lanyards, knots and ropes
- Inspection and logging fall arrest equipment
- Planning and carrying out successful rescues
- Includes assessment and registration of credits for US: 15757 Employ fall arrest systems on building and construction sites. Minimum requirement for working at heights - Department of Labour Guidance Notes.
Unit Standards in this course include:
- US 23229 Use a safety harness for fall prevention when working at height in a construction or related context
- US 15757 Employ fall arrest systems on building and construction sites
Additional Unit Standards can be added in this course including:
- US 14617 Prevent hazards associated with working at heights on construction sites
- US 17600 Explain safe work practices for working at heights
One day Refresher Courses are recommended every two years to update on changes to legislation and fall arrest techniques at work

The National Certificate in Industrial Rope Access (Elementary Rope Skills) Level 3 is a great introduction to rope-access. You will gain the skills to move on ropes in a vertical environment using the most common rope access systems and be able to work as part of a team. You will be shown how to efficiently negotiate through most systems, deal with emergency situations (should they arise) and initiate a rescue on a simple rope access system.
Core Elements
This Programme is offered in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
The level 3 Industrial Rope Programme includes training in:
- Fall arrest systems and equipment (NZQA Unit 15757)
- Edge protection and fall prevention
- Workplace Health and Safety
- Hazard identification and management
- Workplace First Aid (NZQA Unit 6400, 6401, 6402)
- Basic mathematics, communication and 2- way radio skills
- Inspection, care and maintenance of industrial rope equipment
- Planning and preparation for rope access work
- Knots and rigging suitable for rope access use
- Abseil and ascension techniques
- Self-rescue and co-worker recovery
Upon successful completion of the programme, you will gain the National Certificate in Industrial Rope Access (Elementary) (Level 3) and may wish to further your training with us by enrolling in the National Certificate in Industrial Rope Access (Working on Ropes) (Level 4).You are also eligible
to apply for a Certificate of Competency through IRAANZ.
Note: Several unit standards can be cross credited towards the National Certificate in Rigging or Scaffolding.
