Fire Brigade Volunteer Morning Tea Shout

Greymouth’s tireless volunteer firefighters received a special treat this week, courtesy of Tai Poutini Polytechnic’s cookery students.

Students in the NZ Certificate in Cookery programme baked‐up a morning tea of slices, biscuits and scones for fire service volunteers at the Greymouth Fire Station earlier this week. Students are assessed on their bakery skills as part of the cookery programme, so the finished product also contributed to their work for the year.

Culinary Arts Tutors Evelyne Baumgartner and Mitesh Mohanrajan say the Polytechnic regularly encourages students to bake for a good cause as a way of honing their skills at the same time as recognising the local community.

“The students are having a wonderful time learning the cookery skills they need to get started in a career in the kitchen. They especially enjoy seeing their efforts enjoyed by members of the local community who give their time to make our place better.

“The fire service volunteers are always here when we need them, at all hours of the day, ready to put themselves at risk for others. We thought a little treat would be well deserved, particularly with National Volunteer Week just on the horizon.”

Te Wiki Tūao ā‐Motu National Volunteer Week runs this month, from 19‐25 June, celebrating the collective contribution of all volunteers who enrich Aotearoa New Zealand.

Tai Poutini Polytechnic is proud to support the local community through activities like this week’s morning tea and other initiatives that make the West Coast a great place to live.
