“I’ve wanted to drive trucks since I was young, now I’m learning how to operate diggers and graders and I’m loving it.”

Civil Plant student Shaza Thomas says there’s no doubt that enrolling at TPP was a great choice and that she’s working toward a better future.

“I was working in private security and I knew it wasn’t what I wanted to do forever. Then I got a job doing security for a large machinery firm; I got to talking with the guys there and it made me realise what I really wanted to do.

“I had a friend who’d studied at TPP so I decided to sign-up. In a few months I’ve gone from knowing nothing to being able to drive a digger and I’m now learning on grader. The people in this line of work are pretty cool and I’m looking forward to a better future.”

“If I hadn’t joined the course I’d just be sitting at home and working in a job I didn’t like. It was the right choice to come here to TPP.”

Shaza says she hasn’t had any problem being a woman training and working in a male-dominated field.

“Everyone has been really supportive and you’ve just got to get on with it. The tutors have been amazing and they’re there every step of the way.”

Shaza is looking forward to work experience and learning more of the skills she needs to get ahead in the industry. She has plans to one day head over to the Australian mines and tackle some of the huge machines they use there.
