Firefighters treated to a special student lunch

Fire Service Lunch TPP

Tai Poutini Polytechnic (TPP) culinary arts students have paid tribute to the hard work of local firefighters by inviting them to a special lunch this week.

The students run four restaurants each year as part of their training, with credits achieved toward their assessments. The students are responsible for all aspects of the service, from meal planning for the three-course lunch, ordering and set‐up, to allocation of tasks, cooking and service for paying guests.

TPP Culinary Arts Tutors Evelyne Baumgartner and Bradley Stanger say it’s a great challenge for the students to put their new skills to work in real‐world environment. They encourage the students to extend their skills as many have never experienced a service like this; they are responsible for the entire lunch and take great pride in their efforts and achievements.

Of this year’s culinary arts student cohort, three are also members of local fire brigades. To mark this relationship, TPP invited four members of the Greymouth, Brunner, Runanga and Blackball fire brigades to attend the lunch and enjoy the efforts of students.

TPP Leader – Engagement Mequa Hourston says the lunch was a fun event and students were able to put their skills to the test.

“The students really enjoy the practical components of the programme, challenging themselves and delivering a great service for their guests. We were pleased to welcome some of our local firefighters on campus and treat them to a special lunch in recognition of all the hard work they do in our community.”
